Sending Digital Pictures and electronic artwork to Reviews OnLine

While we try to take our own pictures as much as possible, sometimes we are unable and need them sent to us. If you are sending them, here are some quick tips that will help us get what we need.

1. All photos need to be a MINIMUM of 600 pixels in their SMALLEST dimension. While this appears to be quite large for the Web, it allows us the capability to crop or resize the picture, but most importantly gives us a chance to also put a larger, "zoomed" version of the picture on the site as well..

Most digital photographs taken by Reviews OnLine are at the maximum resolution of the camera at the LOWEST compression. Currently this ranges from 640x480 to 1280x960, depending on camera. A larger picture is preferred over a smaller one, but in no case should the picture need to be larger than one megabyte when transmitted - this is not a print publication.

This picture should be save using either low or lossless compression. Most times. a highly compressed picture will NOT look good on the site, even if resized smaller. The picture should be of high quality with the product in focus and our preference is for images with fairly neutral backgrounds.

Desired formats include: PSD, TIFF, JPEG or BMP (Zip BMPs before sending). Accepable formats also include PCX or GIF. We find that there is too much picture quality loss, due to the limited color palette in the GIF format, so the GIF format is only acceptable for company logos that use only solid colors.

2. All screen shots should be sent as a Zipped BMP files. While other formats are acceptable, we have found that this format gives perfect quality at an extremely small size. I have seen full 1024x768 screen shots compress from their original 2.5 megabyte size down to only 60K without any loss (Zip is a lossless compression.) A 300 pixel version that would be used in the article is quire readable. Please do NOT sent screen shots in JPEG format!!

These screen shots should convey some unique aspect of the software package, one that sets this software package apart from others.

3. If film photographs are being sent, only high quality 35mm slides or color prints (8 inches x 10 inches maximum) are acceptable. TRANSPARENCIES are NOT acceptable and cannot be used. Also, black and white photographs cannot be used.

Thanks for your cooperation.
